Indian police accused of using 'excessive force' against protesters

Police in India is being accused of using “unauthorised and excessive force” against protesters at New Delhi's Jamia Millia University about two weeks ago.
The ongoing protests are against a new citizenship law that has been labelled anti-Muslim.
An independent investigation found that officers indiscriminately beat demonstrators, destroyed public property and arrested people unlawfully.
It says police worked as “a lawless force sanctioned to quell dissent”.
Police are also being accused of intimidating and firing on protesters in Uttar Pradesh, where 18 people were killed.
Nitika Khaitan is from the People’s Union for Democratic Rights and was part of the fact-finding team that looked into the police response.
She spoke to Al Jazeera's Elizabeth Puranam about what protesters and witnesses told her.
