I've gone through a lot of gear over the years of shooting Look At Me Play Guitar videos. One piece of equipment that I used for a number of years was the Zoom H6. Handheld, decent quality, great battery life, attached mics as well as XLR inputs, six channels, that recorder filled many niches. But the new Zoom F6 has replaced the H6 completely. The improved sound quality and expanded dynamic range makes is a real winner for my uses. You can see my take on the tradeoffs between the two recorders here:

If only the F6 had attached mics ... which is what this video is about. A poster on a recording forum mentioned that he attached a pair of Line Audio Omni1 mics to his Sound Devices MixPre. I was inspired to follow suit and it has become my new area of experimentation. First I learned that most mics won't plug directly into the XLR jack on my F6. Then I learned that a couple of mics did work - my Schoeps CMC6 mic amps and the phantom adapters for my DPA 4061 connected properly. I also learned that there was an inexpensive adapter that would make it possible to connect other mics to the XLR ins. And I've been using the top camera attachment plate that comes with the F6 to hold a mic bar by using thread adapters.
In this video I'll show my current ideas for a LAMPG rig using the F6. As mentioned in this video, I have some clips using similar setups:
Led Kaapana and I being recorded with Schoeps CMC62s straight into the F6:
• Kaimana Hila - Slack Key with Ledward Kaapana
Led Kaapana and I being recorded with Shure KSM141s mounted atop the F6:
• Keiki Slack Key with Led Kaapana
I shot this video with my Panasonic Lumix GH5 and edited in Edius 9.
