I often think the most powerful songs aren't the big, in your face ones but the quiet ones that modestly break new ground. For me John Lennon's 'Julia' is that.
It is truly mindboggling to think just a few years before the Beatles were writing pop songs about holding girls hands. Here, in 1968, is Lennon penning illusive poetic lines openly referencing his Mother, tragically killed when he was just 17 years old, though distant throughout his childhood; at the same time cleverly interweaving his astonishment at the love he feels for Yoko Ono. You can almost see the filmic overlays of these two women as he mixes up his love and longing for both, his sun and moon.
Honest, raw, poetic, vulnerable - all things we expect from our singer-songwriters now but I think here is an early example, really writing the blueprint of how it can be done so beautifully.
