MK Stalin lost Kolathur by 8795 votes after heavy SIR deletions while Mamata Banerjee lost Bhabanipur – is the Election Commission compromised?

Tamil Nadu saw nearly 70–74 lakh names deleted (around 11–11.5%).

In MK Stalin’s own Kolathur constituency, final figures show over 83,000 deletions from a pre-SIR electorate of roughly 2.8–2.9 lakh. In the April 2026 Assembly election, Stalin lost the seat to TVK’s V.S. Babu by 8,795 votes. He has since sought EVM verification in 14 booths.

West Bengal recorded approximately 90–91 lakh deletions. In Mamata Banerjee’s Bhabanipur, around 47,000 names were removed (roughly 23% of the pre-SIR electorate of 2.06 lakh). She lost the seat to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by 15,105 votes.

Findings of RTI activist Anjali Bharadwaj and Replies (from the screenshots)

1. Main reply regarding the decision to conduct nationwide SIR (RTI No. 30951, dated around 27-28 Aug 2025)
Anjali asked for:

Copy of any independent appraisal/study/analysis on which ECI decided to initiate SIR across the country in 2025

Reference numbers of all files in which the decision was processed and approved
Copies of all such files (including notings, correspondence, etc.)

Permission to inspect the files

ECI CPIO Reply:
“For information, you may refer to Commission’s guideline dated 24.06.2025 which is self-explanatory and available on Commission’s website…

Further, no any information in this regard is available in the Commission.”

2. First Appellate Authority (FAA) reply by Principal Secretary T.C. Kom (the most important one)
“I have examined the original application and reply of the CPIO… CPIO has not provided as the requisite information is not available with him in any material form.

In this connection, the appellant is informed that the Commission has so far not taken any decision on initiating a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) across the country in 2025 and hence no information to be provided in this regard.

But CPIO has provided instruction of the Commission vide letter 24.06.2025 which is available with him. The appellant is further informed that RTI Act mandated to disclose information which is available with public authority in material form only. Hence, the appeal is disposed of accordingly.”

3. Reply on Bihar 2003 SIR (RTI No. 30952)

Anjali asked for the 2003 order/notification and guidelines for the intensive revision in Bihar.
ECI Reply:

They simply directed her to the 24 June 2025 order (the current SIR guidelines) instead of providing the 2003 documents.
