Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya is facing the death penalty in Yemen. Her execution is scheduled for July 16, 2025. Despite multiple appeals and diplomatic efforts by the Indian government, no breakthrough has been achieved. She is accused of murdering her Yemeni business partner Talal Abdo Mahdi in 2017. Nimisha’s family claims it was an act of self-defence against prolonged abuse and exploitation.
On July 14, India's Attorney General told the Supreme Court that the government has done everything possible within its limits. Yemen’s ongoing conflict, absence of an Indian embassy, and the location being under Houthi rebel control make intervention extremely difficult. Efforts to settle through blood money have also failed so far. The case is now hanging by a thread, as India awaits Yemen’s response.
