Mary Austin Breaks Silence on Claims of Freddie Mercury's Secret Daughter

Freddie Mercury passed away in November 1991, aged just 45, after publicly revealing he was living with AIDS. During his life, he spoke about Austin with deep affection. Back in 1985, he famously said:
‘All my lovers ask me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s impossible. The only friend I’ve got is Mary, and I don’t want anybody else. We believe in each other; that’s enough for me.’

Fast forward to March 2025, when a woman—known only as B—came forward, claiming Freddie was her father.

Her story is detailed in the new book Love, Freddie, written by biographer Lesley-Ann Jones. In it, B claims Mercury was “devoted” to her, and reveals she was entrusted with 17 handwritten diary entries shortly before his death—insisting she was his only child and his next of kin.

Until now, it was believed that only Freddie’s parents, his sister, his Queen bandmates, and Mary Austin knew all of his secrets.

But Mary Austin, now 74, has strongly denied the claims.

Talking to The Times Austin said
‘Freddie had a glorious openness, and I cannot imagine he would have wanted to, or been able to, keep such a joyful event a secret, either from me or other people closest to him.’

She went further, addressing B’s claim that she was the “guardian of Freddie’s undisclosed secrets.”

‘The truth is that I am simply not the guardian of such a secret. I’ve never known of any child, or of any diaries. If Freddie had indeed had a child without me knowing anything about it, that would be astonishing to me.’

For decades, Mary Austin has been described as the love of Freddie’s life, his “common-law wife.” While new stories continue to emerge, she insists that if such a child existed, Freddie would never have hidden it from her.
