My first chemistry video! The formose reaction. In the formose reaction, we add formaldehyde to an alkaline solution of bivalent metal salts, such as calcium and magnesium hydroxide. Upon heating, this results in something called an aldol reaction, whereby the individual units of formaldehyde combine to form simple pentose and hexose sugars.
Results of this experiment will be published on Wednesday 8-23.
