POTA Support Your Parks Weekend - Summer 2024 - Nova Scotia, Canada

This event is part of the Parks on the Air (POTA) program, which organizes seasonal activity weekends to promote amateur radio operations in parks and other protected areas.

On Sunday of the event, Stuart, accompanied by Archie VE9PUP, journeyed to Nova Scotia to activate two significant historical sites: Fort Lawrence and Beaubassin National Historic Sites.

Beaubassin and Fort Lawrence National Historic Sites are located near Amherst, Nova Scotia, and are rich in archaeological resources. These sites played a crucial role in the struggle between Great Britain and France for control of the Isthmus of the Chignecto region. Beaubassin was once a thriving Acadian settlement, while Fort Lawrence was established by the British in response to French fortifications in the area.

The Support Your Parks weekends, organized by POTA, take place on the 3rd full weekend of designated months. These events aim to increase amateur radio activity in parks and raise awareness about the importance of these protected areas.

Fort Lawrence National Historic Site is an archaeological site on Fort Lawrence Road in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. It sits atop a gentle rise overlooking the surrounding Tantramar Marshes, providing an excellent vantage point for radio operations.

Stuart and Archie's activation of these sites during the POTA event contributed to their personal radio achievements and helped highlight the historical significance of Beaubassin and Fort Lawrence. Visitors to these sites can enjoy a view park approximately 400 meters past the Nova Scotia Visitor Information Center. It offers a panoramic view of the area where Stuart and Archie conducted their radio operations.

By participating in this event, Stuart and Archie combined their passion for amateur radio with promoting Canada's rich historical heritage, embodying the spirit of the POTA Support Your Parks initiative.
