Ubald Vrabec (1905–1992): In the Night
The Light Came Forth – Christmas songs of Slovene composers
Conductors notes on the CD:
Christmas time seems to have been a source of particular charm and inspiration for Slovenian composers of the 1800s and the first half of the 1900s. The selection of music before you should in no way be considered an anthology, for it is very personal. I chose those pieces that continue to move me again and again each year, and without which I could not imagine the true Slovenian Christmas. The selected music prides itself on graceful melodics and inventive organ accompaniments, from introductions to interludes, creating an air of late baroque and classical festiveness in some pieces, and combining colourful harmonies of late romanticism in others. These miniature masterpieces still have the power to speak to us today and reveal to us the wonderful mystery of the birth of the Son of God.
Damijan Močnik
Ubald Vrabec, who was a violinist and a pianist, was born into a musical family. He studied music in Trieste and Bologna, and then worked among the Slovenes in Argentina, as well as in Maribor and in Trieste. His work in composition went hand in hand with his work in conducting - he found great joy in teaching and conducting several choirs. His motto was to never restrain the singers, but to always let them sing freely and vividly. He composed music for various choral ensembles as well as for different instruments and the orchestra, anything from cantatas to operas. Church music represents a big part of his opus, while his Christmas songs are especially popular.
The text of the song, written by Vinko Beličič, is complemented by Vrabec's music. Together they manage to paint a convincing picture of a dark night. In 2020, this may be the Chrismas song that we can relate to most – it tells of sadness, pain and despair – but also of hope and God's merciful grace, which can be felt most directly on Christmas. We hope that these holy harmonies find a way into our hearts this year especially ...
