The book of Romans is about how sinful men could be made righteous and have a wonderful relationship with Jesus.
Romans 1:1 (ESV) Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God
Saul didn't actually change his name; he had both a Hebrew name (Saul) and a Roman name (Paul) from birth, a common practice for Jews with Roman citizenship.
In Hebrew, "Saul" means "Great One" or "Asked For," reflecting a man of high status and Pharisaic pride.
In Greek, "Paul" means "Little". This shift illustrates the humility required to enter God's service;
The man who once hunted Christians now considers himself the smallest of servants for their sake.
Paul introduces himself in three ways, each one emphasizing the contradictions in his life.
A Servant (Slave) of Christ Jesus: Paul uses the word doulos, meaning a bondservant. In the Roman world, a slave was "unwanted" they lacked rights and status. Paul wore this title as a badge of honor because of WHO he serves.
Called to be an Apostle: An apostle is a "sent one," a representative of the sender.
Paul did not pursue this position through conventional means; rather, he was divinely called during the incident on the Damascus Road.
Set Apart for the Gospel: The word "set apart" (aphorismenos) implies being reserved for a specific use. Paul was pulled out of his old life of religious legalism to be used for God's specific purpose.
1 Timothy 1:15–16 (NLT) This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” and I am the worst of them all. 16 But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.
Even if you feel excluded by your culture, family, or past experiences, being in Christ means you are welcomed into a higher calling that goes beyond your place in society.
Ask God to help you live with purpose and seek your identity in Him,
rather than the world’s expectations.
The Gospel of Romans tells us that while we were "unwanted" by the world
we have been "invited" by God’s grace to dine at His Table
This morning…
Do you see yourself as "unwanted," or have you accepted the "invitation"?
Like Paul, once you have dined at the King’s table, you are assigned to bring others to the table.
