UND student Marie Bergelin and professor Jaakko Putkonen recently discovered the world's oldest ice in Antarctica. The UND research team drilled 30 feet into the Ong Valley in Antarctica in 2018. Data and testing have indicated the ice dates back 5 million years.
Putkonen, associate professor of geology at UND’s Harold Hamm School of Geology & Geological Engineering, makes regular research trips to Antarctica. Bergelin was a Ph.D. student at the University of North Dakota at the time and graduated in 2022.
