Is it time to grow more exotic plants outside in the UK in your garden?. For many UK gardeners, the dream of a lush, exotic garden—bursting with bold foliage, architectural shapes, and vibrant colour—often collides with the reality of winter. The traditional approach has long involved rolls of fleece, straw, bubble wrap, and frantic November weekends spent bundling plants like fragile parcels. But the truth is that with smarter plant choices, better siting, and a more natural approach to hardiness, you can grow a surprisingly wide range of tropical‑looking plants with far less winter labour.
The key is understanding that “tropical” doesn’t always mean “tender.” Many exotic‑looking plants are far tougher than they appear, and with thoughtful placement and soil preparation, they can sail through a British winter with minimal intervention. Let’s explore how this applies to some of the most iconic exotics: Musa basjoo banana, cannas, tree ferns, cardoons, Echium, and bird of paradise.
One of the most powerful tools in reducing winter wrapping is exploiting microclimates. Even in a single garden, temperatures can vary dramatically. South‑facing walls, sheltered courtyards, and areas protected from prevailing winds can create pockets of warmth that mimic more temperate regions.
Musa basjoo is often the gateway plant for UK gardeners venturing into exotic gardening. Despite its tropical appearance, it’s remarkably hardy—down to around –10°C if the rootstock is protected. But protecting the rootstock doesn’t have to mean elaborate wrapping.
The trick is to focus on the crown, not the leaves. The foliage will die back each winter regardless, so there’s no need to wrap the entire plant. Instead, cut the stems down to about 30–60 cm after the first frost and mulch heavily.
Hardy palms are Trachycarpus Fortunei and Mexican Washingtonia robusta Palm and Phoenix Canariensis date palms
