Welcome back! This time we will fly from Madrid across the ocean to Santiago de Chile on Iberia onboard the legendary Airbus A340-600, which is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite aircraft!

IB6833 is one of the 2 direct flights IB operates between Madrid and Santiago daily. The MAD-SCL route is the second-longest route on the Iberia network, with a total distance of 10,700 km and 13 hours of flight, just behind the Madrid-Tokyo Narita route (10,769 km).

IB currently operates its flights to Chile with the new Airbus A350s that are renewing the long-haul fleet. Despite the age of the remaining A340s in the fleet, the onboard experience was great and the cabin interiors were remarkably well maintained.

Sadly, due to the COVID-19 crisis, Iberia has just announced that the entire A340-600 fleet will be retired throughout 2020. This is an advance on the initial retirement date since the airline was scheduled to retire its last A340 by 2025.

The onboard experience on IB6833 was pleasant and efficient. The on-board entertainment system is very intuitive and offers a wide content of movies, series, and much more. The economy class seat is very comfortable and does the job for a long-haul flight, with a generous recline angle, good legroom, and an adjustable headrest. The standard 2-4-2 seat configuration on the A340 allows for greater width in each seat. A complimentary blanket and pillow as well as a set of headphones can be found on each seat upon boarding. A hot meal was served soon after takeoff. There is no appetizer service prior to the meal.

During most part of the flight, the cabin lights were kept off to facilitate the rest of the passengers. However, as usual on long-haul flights, a small stand was set up with snacks and drinks in the galleys. It would have been better if the crew did rounds with drinks through the cabin in order to avoid passengers constantly crowding into the galleys during the flight. I think this would have allowed a better rest for both the passengers and the crew members. About 1 hour before landing, a breakfast consisting of a snack box and drinks of choice was served. During the flight, we crossed several areas of turbulence over Brazil and Paraguay. The crossing of the Andes mountain range during the descent to SCL at dawn was very scenic.

The crew delivered a professional and efficient service throughout the flight. However, they were not particularly friendly or smiling. They didn't seem to be willing to have a small chat with the passengers during the service or in the galleys. This is something that I sadly encounter regularly when traveling on Iberia; maybe they should work on improving this aspect. A small gesture of warmth and politeness towards the passengers definitely makes the entire flight experience much more enjoyable.

As you might have noticed, this is not a full "Flight Experience", since I focused primarily on the final part of the flight this time. Around 90% of the flight was rather uneventful and in complete darkness, so I took advantage of this to rest as much as I could.
