From "Popstar to Operastar", on the British channel ITV1, June 19th 2011. Well-known singers from the world of pop try their hand at opera under the guidance of Rolando Villazon and Katherine Jenkins. They are then judged and voted on by the public in the usual way. The other judges are Simon Callow the actor and opera director, and Vanessa Mae the virtuoso violinist.
Although this was Melody's last performance before she got voted off, she had improved amazingly and showed great potential as a more serious singer. I hope she keeps up her singing lessons - although now she will have to pay for them herself!
The aria she was given is from the opera Samson and Delilah by Saint-Saens. It was associated with the black American contralto Marian Anderson. She had difficulty being accepted in opera because of her colour, so Eleanor Roosevelt the President's wife arranged for her to give an open-air concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial building in Washington. It was broadcast across the nation on radio.
