This video focuses on quickly generating sensory descriptive language, and takes young writers through a series of simple prompts to turn their favourite word into a "character poem".

I've had a lot of success using this with small groups of year 5 or 6 children working independently, but I also know it works well with a whole class of any primary year group, provided they are being taken through it by a teacher or TA.

Most kids will probably get the most from this activity if they've done a quick warm up first, for example the game "yes, and..." which you can find here:    • Fun writing warm-up game for kids - "Yes, ...

Using a series of prompts in this way to almost instantly come up with a draft of a poem is a popular approach amongst poet-facilitators. Working with character in this way is something I first experienced in person at Keats House in a workshop run by Aoife Mannix.
