'On a rare night off last spring I went to watch Elles Bailey play a show nearby. We’d played on the same bill a couple of times before at festivals but this was the first time I’d gotten to listen to her properly. I was blown away by the tone and phrasing of her voice and also the stories that she told the audience about her songs. It was obvious to me that she and I had very complimentary singing styles and I began to wonder what it would be like to write a duet for us.

Next morning I sat down at the piano and started to work on a chord sequence I’d been playing around with for a little while. The melody quickly took shape and very soon after I had a complete lyric. I recorded a quick demo (singing all the harmony parts myself) and sent it over to Elles to check out. She seemed pretty surprised (we’d barely even met before and here was this hairy weirdo writing a duet out of the blue and slinging it at her) but seemed to take it well and agreed to sing on it with me.

I recorded the backing track for the song in Nashville the following month. Coincidentally Elles was in town at the same time tracking for her new album too but our schedules didn’t allow us time to work on it together so we met up at my place in Brighton a little while later where we sang the duet parts together.

The song itself touches on the ‘trials and tribulations of being in relation’ - how decisions our loved ones make can have significant impact on us and how best to deal with them. Do we stay in the moment or do we set our own course, ’bid our farewells’ or ‘trust in the waves’?


'Pick Up Our Anchor' is taken from Mike Ross' upcoming album 'The Clovis Limit Pt.1' which is out on the 26th April. Mike is also one-third of Redfern, Hutchinson & Ross, whose critically acclaimed album 'Mahogany Drift' is out now!
