We live within the atmosphere of a star—the Sun. The interaction of the Earth's
atmosphere with the Sun's causes spectacular phenomena like the aurorae, i.e., the
Northern and Southern Lights. This interaction also causes geomagnetic storms that
can disrupt power supplies, which once nearly led to a nuclear war!
In this talk, I shall explore what we know about our Sun and how it affects life on
Earth. I will also delve into how we determine what goes on inside the Sun,
underneath its opaque surface, that can drive all the atmospheric phenomena.
Sarbani Basu is a leading expert in helio- and asteroseismology.
Her early research on solar structure helped establish that the
solar neutrino problem originated in particle physics, not
astrophysics. She now investigates long-term solar variability and
the structures and ages of exoplanet-hosting stars to better
understand stellar evolution and the Sun’s future.
