The government shutdown became the longest in US history on Tuesday night as any agreement between Democrats and Republicans remained elusive. At 36 days, the effects of the impasse are becoming more visible. Airports are short of at least 2,000 traffic controllers. More than 42 million Americans won’t get their full food benefits in November. Billions in wider funding has been stalled and more than one million federal workers aren’t being paid.

Sean Duffy, the transport secretary, said the administration may soon be forced to close parts of America’s airspace as a result of the staff shortages. “You will see mass flight delays,” he warned. “You’ll see mass cancellations and you may see us close certain parts of the airspace because we just cannot manage it, because we don’t have the air traffic controllers.”

In 2019, during the last shutdown that dragged on for 35 days, one in ten airport screeners did not turn up for work and LaGuardia Airport in New York had to halt incoming flights. President Trump ended the shutdown hours later.

On Monday, John Thune, the Senate majority leader, said he was optimistic, but not yet confident, that senators could reach an agreement to reopen government this week.
