《Sound Perspectives》
This series of exhibitions will primarily focus on broadcasting sound works that will interact with the current natural and social soundscape of the metro park. The sound works will become a part of the park’s natural and social soundscape as a way to explore its history in a nonlinear way.
Despite the seemingly linear evolution of public spaces, this exhibition attempts to explore the ever-present echo of local histories, whether acknowledged or not.
This particular series will focus on Taipei’s 228 Memorial Peace Park. The municipal park serves as a public memorial for the victims of Taiwan’s February 28th massacre, yet the park has previously served as various cultural symbols: indigenous hunting grounds; local temple grounds; colonial cultural hubs; an underground space for sexual minorities; an iconic socio-political memorial.
The exhibited series will broadcast sound works will contrast and mix elements of Taiwanese, Japanese, American, and Chinese artists’ interpretations of these cultural themes. The outdoor exhibition will also blur the lines between audience and the public as a way to challenge and reflect on local understanding of history and identity.
Each of these sound recordings will be placed strategically in historical or contextual locations within the park.
Each of the sound recordings will juxtapose and interplay with each other as they mix in a collage form in the park.
The audience will experience sound works that will give a new interpretation of history, as well as cultural and social identity of place and community.
