Victory Day Parade ( Russian : Парад Победы / Parad Pobedy ) is an annual military parade held on 9 May in several post-Soviet states, primarily Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and formerly Ukraine. The ceremony is often held with great fanfare to honor the traditional Victory Day ( 9 May ) holiday. Today, Russia is the largest of the former Soviet states that continues to hold parades and marches to honor victories in the Great Patriotic War – the Eastern Front of World War II ( as the former Soviet Union called it ). The first parade under the Russian Federation was held in 1995 ( five years after the collapse of the Soviet Union ) under the auspices of President Boris Yeltsin, who organized the parade to celebrate the golden anniversary of the Soviet and allied victory in the war. In an interview with the TASS news agency, General Oleg Salyukov, who commanded the parade for nearly a decade, highlighted the purpose of the parade as "a people's celebration, not a display of militarism" in reference to accusations that the parade was used to showcase Russia's military might.
