Assam Protests | Massive Student Protest Over Proposed ST Status Expansion In Assam

Описание: In a major and unprecedented development from Assam, thousands of tribal students and Gen Z in the Bodoland region of Assam dominated by the Bodo tribe , the largest tribal group in Assam, today stormed the secretariat of the Bodoland Territorial Council ( BTC) after
a massive rally protesting the state government’s move to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six additional communities.

The students have allegedly ransacked parts of the BTC secretariat

The march began at Bodoland University and headed towards the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Secretariat in Kokrajhar, where tensions flared as protesters accused the government of undermining the rights of the Bodo community and diluting their political, educational and economic safeguards.

The Bodos and other tribal groups are opposing the move of the state govt proposing centre to grant scheduled tribe status to Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Matak, Koch-Rajbongshi and Tea Tribe communities,

The Bodos and the other existing tribal groups feel that this decision will reduce their share of reservation benefits and representation.
