The State Attorney's Office is now charging a man with second-degree murder after he was arrested for a road rage incident turned deadly shooting in Riverview, according to a press release.
Jorge Ramirez, 20, was arrested after authorities found 34-year-old Bryan Proenza with gunshot wounds on Tuesday, Jan. 16, in the area of Rose Lane and Bay Tree Drive, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
He was originally arrested in this incident and charged with three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
On Tuesday, Ramirez was taken into custody in Brevard County by detectives with the assistance of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators say he was arrested without incident and will be transported to Orient Road Jail.
According to the state attorney's office, Ramirez was driving his black BMW sedan with two friends when he approached Proenza's vehicle from behind. Witnesses say Ramirez was trying to pass and cut through a parking lot to avoid waiting at a red light.
The passengers in Ramirez’s vehicle tell authorities he became angry when the Proenza's vehicle blocked the entrance to the parking lot. Ramirez began closely following the victim’s vehicle afterward, ramming the hitch several times.
Ramirez passed the Chevy Suburban in a residential area and quickly stopped to exit the car. The victim also exited his vehicle and retrieved two metal pipes from the trunk. According to the state attorney's release, witnesses from both vehicles say the victim was never running toward the BMW or threatening anyone when shots rang out.
10 Tampa Bay spoke with Proenza's partner, Rachel Keesee, who was in the vehicle with him and their two young children when the incident took place.
"Bryan did not approach them at all. He's not a hurtful person. He would never hurt anybody, but he will protect his family regardless of what he's got to do," Keesee said.
The release said Ramirez, from behind his black BMW, shot at the victim who was more than 20 feet away at the time of the shooting.
