Historically based medieval re-enactment combat weapon. Weighs a little more than an average sword, 1.65kg of versatility. Use with axe, sword or spear techniques. Training and grading required in three other weapons before use.
Glaive design based on an eleventh century Danish axe ( I believe -planking axe/shave or guillotine 52cm long) kept on display at the Viking Museum in Roskilde, Denmark. Idea being a working tool was reversed and put on a long haft for battle.
Primary bend in the haft improves safety by flattening head shot at full range. Secondary bend aids strikes to your opponents right upper arm without changing hand position. Great for approaching right handed sword and board with your right hand choking the head. Curved blade lines up the point to the shaft for spear thrust accuracy.
Balanced really well, hand closet to the head becomes the pivot, increases speed and dexterity at just beyond sword range.
Aspen shaft re-enforced with a rawhide sheath is light, strong and impact resistant. The rawhide ensures if the timber breaks that the glaive head will not fly off. A combatant could potentially keep using the weapon even if compromised. Note, I would not use this haft in full contact combat such as Battle of Nations or Buhurt. Glaive made for pulled blows in re-enactment combat. So far it has proven itself strong and reliable during inter club combat at Abbey Medieval Festival.
Warriors laugh at my little axe called Guppy. A small single handed axe head on a long crepe myrtle haft. Seen on my vid. • They call me Brune! The Barbarian.
So small but deemed a weapon of mass destruction. Too quick and deadly. I have joked, for over a decade, that one day it would grow up into a real Dane axe. My little guppy has grown up into a shark.
Meet Thresher, and be scared those who face me, for this is my ultimate glaive!
