Most traditional Chinese padlocks have long, straight shackles that easily pass through two loops attached to a pair of doors or to a chest.
A barbed-spring lock is secured by a bolt with one or more flexible, flat springs, which, like fishhooks, easily move forward but resist moving backward. After entering the lock case, the barbed springs spread apart, and the bolt cannot be removed until the springs have been compressed by a key or by some other means.
This brass lock was made in the late 19th to early 20th century, and to make it more secure the locksmith has cleverly hidden its keyhole. Several steps are required to expose the keyhole before one can insert the key and push out the bolt and shackle.
