I spent 30 days testing the new Starlink satellite texting beta from T-Mobile on my iPhone 16 across the Southern California backcountry—Joshua Tree, the Mojave, and the Santa Ana foothills. The goal was simple: figure out how well this satellite messaging works when you're off the grid. I wanted to know if it’s reliable enough for emergencies, how it compares to Apple’s satellite texting system, and whether I’d trust it in a real backcountry situation.
First, let’s be clear: this isn’t Starlink’s satellite internet. This is Starlink Direct to Cell (DTC)—essentially satellite-powered cellular towers in low Earth orbit. When you're outside of regular cell range, the phone connects to these satellites and lets you send SMS messages. But in my experience, connection was hit or miss. About 60% of messages went through successfully, and incoming replies worked even less reliably. Battery drain was also a big issue—likely due to the phone constantly searching for and connecting to fast-moving satellites.
When compared to Apple’s Globalstar-powered satellite messages (also on the iPhone 16), Apple came out ahead. Messages were delivered faster, the experience was more integrated into iOS, and the system gave better feedback about connectivity. Starlink, by contrast, lacked clear status indicators, had delays, and sometimes dropped incoming messages entirely until I returned to cellular coverage.
The potential here is huge, and having both Starlink and Globalstar satellite messaging on one device is pretty remarkable. But right now, Starlink still feels like beta tech. I wouldn’t rely on it as my only backcountry emergency communication. It might be good as a backup, but for serious trips I’d stick with a Garmin inReach or something similar until this matures.
If you're considering Starlink texting as a safety tool—or just want to message from remote areas—this video breaks it all down with real-world testing, not theory. I’ll continue to track updates as the service rolls out and becomes available beyond T-Mobile customers.
