Red Star Line was the less famous cousin of White Star Line. Both lines were owned by the International Mercantile Marine, but Red Star's ships were not as grand or as famous. The company's biggest ship, Belgenland, was nonetheless a great ocean liner both in terms of design and historical significance. Belgenland, then named belgic, served as a wartime cargo ship, troop transport ship, transatlantic express liner, and cruise ship.
Had World War I not interrupted Belgenland's construction, she might have been a more successful express ocean liner of the Edwardian Era. However, fate would have it that she never saw great financial success. Still, she had excellent amenities even compared to some of her more famous contemporaries like Olympic, Titanic, Lusitania, and Aquitania.
