Aimed at redefining what global co-operation could look like, the recent BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia ended with clear signs that change is coming. With the addition of what has been called partners countries, 13 states, including NATO member Turkiye, are poised to increase co-operation with the group. Founded in 2009, many are calling BRICS a serious alternative to western-led institutions.
Leaders at the summit discussed criteria for admitting new members and emphasized the need for alignment with the bloc's values and influence. Comprising over 30% of global GDP, the group's economic goal is to reduce dependence on the US dollar and promote the use of national currencies in bilateral trade. But Western leaders have voiced skepticism and reluctance to engage with BRICS, which is led by US adversaries China and Russia. But the group is seeing growing popularity among the global south, with dozens of countries expressing interest in joining.
