Japan's Komeito party announced Friday in Tokyo that it would break its 26-year partnership with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) over its handling of a political funding scandal.
The break came less than a week after LDP elected its first female leader, Sanae Takaichi, casting doubt over her premiership bid in a parliamentary vote later this month.
"In recent years, the issues surrounding the political funding of the governing Liberal Democratic Party have eroded public trust in politics as a whole," Komeito leader Tetsuo Saito said in a news conference.
He said Komeito would not back Takaichi in a parliamentary vote to confirm her as Japan's next prime minister, originally expected to he held around Oct. 15, but likely to be pushed back by the hiatus.
The LDP is 37 seats short of a majority in parliament's lower house and opposition parties can put forward their own candidates when parliament meets to vote on the next premier. Any candidate who secures a simple majority in the first round wins approval.
