Sinking land and cracking homes -- that's the reality of residents in India's Joshimath, where hundreds have moved to safer places. More than 30% of the northern city is affected by subsidence, where the ground sinks due to natural or man-made activities. Experts said large-scale projects, such as highways, power projects, hotels and multi-storey apartments, may be to blame. Authorities have declared Joshimath unsafe for living, although the problem dates back decades.
