Mercurial, witty, and luminous, The Elsewhereans is Jeet Thayil’s genre-defying work that moves between fiction, memoir, travelogue and ghost story. Unfolding from the backwaters of Kerala to Bombay, Hong Kong, Paris, and beyond, the documentary novel is an elegy for vanished worlds and a reckoning with the histories we inherit. In conversation with Mandira Nayar, Thayil discusses his meditation on migration, loss, and identity.
Jeet Thayil is the author of five novels and five books of poetry, and the editor of The Penguin Book of Indian Poets. His most recent poetry collection is I'll Have it Here (winner of the Sarojini Naidu Award and the Kalinga Literary Award). His latest novel is The Elsewhereans.
Mandira Nayar has been a journalist for over two decades. Till recently, she was the Deputy Bureau Chief at The Week, where she wrote on culture, foreign policy and books. She is a Co-founder Agla Varka, a cultural platform which aims to spark meaningful conversations on Punjab, going beyond all stereotypes. She has also worked with The Hindu and The Telegraph.
