Walking Together in Love — Reflections on Parent-Child Relationships**
My name is Brother Wang Tsai-Meng,
Today, I would like to share reflections on the theme of parent-child relationships.
To be honest, this topic might be more suitable for my wife to share.
However, I would still like to offer my own life experience, as a father who has learned—sometimes belatedly—the importance of family companionship.
I started my business at the age of twenty-four. My profession is in cultural and creative development for gifts and promotional products. Because of the nature of my work, I had to engage extensively with groups, organizations, and people.
In my younger years, I had no background, no resources, and no support system.
To build a foundation, I had to invest an extraordinary amount of time and effort into work.
I joined many organizations, including the International Junior Chamber, Kiwanis, Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, as well as local clan associations, young entrepreneurs’ groups, reserve military associations, charity organizations, and professional guilds.
For many years, I spent at least five days a week attending meetings and social gatherings outside the home. As a result, my time with family was very limited.
Throughout my children’s elementary and junior high school years, their communication notebooks were always signed by my wife.
Parent-teacher meetings and school affairs were also handled entirely by her.
Most of my energy was devoted to social organizations, guided by the belief that “networking is capital,” and that organizations were the fastest way to build human connections.
Over more than thirty years, this effort did help me establish a stable professional foundation.
Yet, along the way, I gradually realized that something precious had quietly been missing.
I am deeply grateful to Sister Chun-Chi, Brother Yang Ming-Chin, and Sister Hsiu-Chun for their encouragement and guidance, which led me to walk into Tzu Chi and become part of this compassionate family.
After joining Tzu Chi, I discovered a profound difference between Tzu Chi and ordinary social organizations.
Most organizations require membership fees and operate in a relatively passive structure.
Tzu Chi, however, requires no fees—it is a community of voluntary, self-motivated giving.
Here, brothers and sisters do not talk about personal gain.
They talk about how to help others, how to relieve suffering, and how to care for those in need.
What we see is a continuous cycle of goodness, sincerity, and compassion.
This environment deeply touched my heart.
One day, while chatting with a fellow Tzu Chi brother, he shared his family practice:
Every week, no matter how busy he was, he set aside one evening as Family Day, to have dinner with his children and grandchildren.
I was deeply inspired.
After discussing it with my wife and children, I realized how meaningful this was—especially now that my children had grown up.
I hoped to intentionally create time to be with them, to communicate not only about family matters but also about work, life challenges, and inner thoughts.
At home, through sincere conversation, we could better understand one another and resolve issues together.
In recent years, I have also made it a priority to plan one or two family trips abroad each year.
Traveling together allows us to spend extended time with one another.
During these journeys, I truly feel happiness and gratitude—sharing experiences, encouraging one another, and learning from different ways of life.
Each time we plan a destination, I feel a sense of anticipation. That anticipation becomes a positive motivation, filling my heart with joy and purpose.
After entering Tzu Chi, I finally understood that helping others is not a burden,
but a warm and uplifting source of strength.
I am deeply grateful for Master Cheng Yen’s teachings and guidance.
What moves me even more is that my son has successfully completed his trainee program and become part of the Tzu Chi family as well.
In this way, the seeds of goodness have begun to sprout and continue within our family—
parents and children walking together, growing through giving, and discovering the direction and value of life through action.
I hope to continue cherishing this precious affinity with Master Cheng Yen and Tzu Chi,
transforming kind intentions into concrete actions, and turning inspiration into strength,
step by step walking firmly on the Bodhisattva Path.
As long as there is love in our hearts and a path beneath our feet,
we need not fear difficulties or storms.
May I walk alongside more kindred spirits, supporting and uplifting one another,
allowing the power of goodness to continue flowing—bringing warmth to society,
leaving love and positive examples for our families, and living a meaningful and radiant life through ordinary days, so that compassion may continue to shine and illuminate our hearts.
