Our boot expert Blake from FootballBoots.co.uk ranks the top five boots to wear in wet and muddy winter pitches.
When buying a boot for soft grounds you should go for something which is easy to maintain, a boot which uptakes little or no water i.e. a synthetic boot and a boot which will provide enough protection.
Bear in mind that we have chosen five boots all in soft ground and from four factors: Maintenance, Protection, Weight and Durability. Maintenance and durability are arguably the two most important parts because if you have boot which is easy to clean it should last you longer. A synthetic boot will mean the upper will have minimised water uptake which will keep the weight of the boot ='s the same. And on those cold winter nights your feet can be numb at times which is why it is important to have a boot which is protective.
Coming in at five is Nike's Hypervenom Phantom boot. The boot will be easy to clean, is synthetic and should give you at least two seasons in muddy conditions.
At four is PUMA's second generation evoPOWER. Like the Hypervenom the boot is synthetic meaning little or no water uptake while it will be easy to clean and should give you a bit of protection on top of your foot.
At three is adidas' brand new F50 generation which is synthetic and one of the easiest boots to clean. The mud should wipe off easy and there should be minimal problems with sole separation. The upper is slightly thicker than the previous generation which will be better for protection.
At two is Nike's Mercurial Vapor X. Now featuring no tongue, the boot won't uptake as much water as the previous generation. The boot is synthetic and cleaning mud off the boots will be a breeze. Minimised protection is the only problem with the Vapor boots.
And at number one is a surprise entry, Nike's Tiempo Legend V. This boot yes is leather, but it features the HyperShield technology which means the boot is 75% less absorbent than the previous generation resulting in a boot which will stay the same weight throughout the match. Keeping these boots clean will be a minor task but protection wise it rates the best of the five.
These are just our Top five boots for soft grounds but in general you should try not to wear leather football boots in wet conditions because the upper uptakes water which lowers the durability of the boots while cleaning leather boots is also difficult because the mud can get in to the stitches and leather.
The likes of the Predator Instinct and nitrocharge by adidas and the UX-1 by Umbro are great for protection on cold winter nights but we have left them out due to the fact that they would be almost impossible to clean perfectly.
If you think we have missed out a boot, please comment below with a boot you thought should have made it.
