In Nigeria, having a Nigerian accent is often seen as being “local,” “village,” or not exposed enough. Meanwhile, a UK accent — especially the polished “Queen’s English” — is automatically associated with intelligence, class, and credibility. But why?
In this video, I talk about classism, inferiority complex, and the unspoken hierarchy of accents in Nigeria. Why do some industries — especially media and entertainment — subtly (or openly) prefer foreign accents over Nigerian ones? When did sounding British become a qualification?
This isn’t just about pronunciation. It’s about identity, confidence, and the way colonial mentality still shapes what we respect.
