Hidden along the banks of the Suwannee River stands a massive abandoned steel bridge—nearly a thousand feet long, rusting in silence, leading absolutely nowhere.
This is the Hillman Bridge, built in 1926 at the height of Florida’s push toward modern highways. Once part of U.S. Highway 90, the bridge was championed by Captain W. J. Hillman, a powerful industrialist known as the “Turpentine King,” and constructed to serve a future that never quite arrived.
Just beyond the bridge lies the ghost town of Ellaville, a once-booming sawmill town founded by Florida governor George Franklin Drew. By the time the bridge opened, the town was already fading—leaving behind a striking monument to ambition, industry, and the complicated legacy of progress.
In this episode of Travel Made Personal, Ki and Dusty walk the abandoned Hillman Bridge, uncover its forgotten history, and explore how time, industry, and nature reshape the places we leave behind.
