At the height of the wild west era, it is estimated between 20,000 and 50,000 women took employment in brothels and other prostitution houses throughout the frontier and territories. With contraception expensive and unreliable, there is a sad reality that a completely unknown amount of children were born as a result of this industry. What is known, is that Madame's of the industry rarely allowed women to raise a child in the brothel house, and in fact sometimes boarded children in another home, or arranged for them to be sent back east to relatives. Women also often married out of the industry once pregnant or took other employment, and children thankfully were rarely raised into the industry. However the lifestyle prescribed by a Madame and the potential for wealth (sometimes 10x per day vs a miner even) ensured the decision to quit the work would leave them immensely poorer overall, and many children would spend most of their childhood or lives, without knowing their mothers.
