Speaker: Scientists from the Tel Aviv University have discovered a unique non-oxygen breathing animal. A parasite called Henneguya salminicola, which lives in the salmon’s muscle gave up breathing and consuming oxygen to produce energy. Aerobic respiration was thought to be ubiquitous in animals, but now we confirmed that this is not the case. Aerobic respiration is a major source of energy, yet we found an animal that gave up this critical pathway. According to Professor Dorothee Huchon, Aerobic Respiration is mainly seen on animals, but their research proved that this is not the case to all of the animals.


Speaker: Huchon also added that their discovery shows that evolution can go in strange directions. The parasite’s anaerobic nature was said to be an accidental discovery. There is also a debate about the potentiality that animals could live without oxygen or live in an anaerobic environment. They found out that the Hennaguya salminicola parasite did not include a mitochondrion, where oxygen is captured to formulate energy, and its absence indicated that the salmon was not breathing oxygen. They also believed that the animal has shed unnecessary genes responsible for aerobic respiration, making it a simpler organism. Professor Huchon stated that the discovery has given great importance to researching evolution.
