Pupillary Distance is the measurement between the centre of both your pupils. It is an important measurement to consider when getting prescription eyeglasses. The average pupillary distance of an adult lies in the range of 55 mm to 75 mm. However, the average PD for men is 63 mm and 60 mm for women.
This measurement is important to understand where you are looking through the lens of your glasses. If your PD is incorrect, it can cause eye fatigue, headaches, and blurred vision. So, get it measured! It is always advised to get your PD measured by an optician for accuracy.
However, you can also measure it at home all by yourself or with the help of a friend. The process is easy to follow.
If you have a high-power prescription or you need multifocal lenses, then getting an accurate PD is necessary. Bifocals and varifocals contain vision correction for various distances, and that is why correct measurements are required to make segments in the lenses properly.
Your PD remains consistent when you use eyeglasses for reading purposes only. However, if there are multiple vision corrections, then your pupillary distance becomes narrower by 3 mm when you look at objects placed nearby.
How do you measure your Pupillary Distance at home?
If you are at home, you can easily measure the pupillary distance between your eyes with the help of a ruler or a measuring tape.
If you do not have either of those things, you can use a downloadable ruler app on your phone or tablet. Take the help of a friend or family member while calculating the PD, or you can do it all by yourself while standing in front of a mirror.
First, remove your glasses.
Take a ruler with millimetre measurements or pick up a measuring tape.
Stand 8 inches away, right in front of a mirror.
Place the ruler horizontally and parallel to your eyebrows, and rest it on your forehead a little bit for stability.
Close your right eye and align the zero-meter of the ruler to the centre of your left pupil.
Now close your left eye and see which number on your ruler is falling right over the centre of your right pupil. The number you’ll get will be your PD.
If you cannot calculate the measurements all by yourself, then you can keep a ruler above your forehead, take a selfie, and send it to us at [email protected]. We will surely help you out!
Open the camera of your mobile phone and click a selfie or take the help of your friend while doing so.
Even when you know how to measure PD with a ruler, you have to repeat the process 4 or 5 times to get it accurate. A normal range of adult PD could be anything between 55-75 mm. However, PD in kids is generally between 43-58 mm.
