In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a self-watering orchid pot – a perfect project for plant lovers looking for a unique, soil-free way to care for their plants. Using wild clay from Somero and high-fired kaolin from Northern Finland, this pot serves as a natural water reservoir, slowly hydrating plants growing directly on its textured surface.

My experience with the Kainuun Kaolin project inspired this project (https://www.kainuunkaoliini.fi/), where artists explore and forage wild Finnish kaolin. I’ll also use sodium silicate to create a rough texture, helping plants cling to the pot.
