During a past presentation on the Doolittle Raid, we measured out 467 feet to demonstrate the distance the first B-25 had to the end of the carrier deck to take-off. At 8:20 AM on April 18, 1942, the Hornet’s flight deck officer flagged Doolittle and Copilot Richard Cole to take off. With the 20 knot speed of the carrier and the 30 knot wind blowing directly down the deck, the B-25 made it off the carrier with feet to spare. At this point, the carrier was about 824 statute miles from the center of Tokyo.
