In a bid to lure Indian diaspora, the Democrats presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden, has promised to revoke H1b visas, if voted to office. Biden, in a digital town hall meeting on Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) issues organised by NBC News, praised the contribution of H-1B visa holders. He blamed Trump for doing that.
The Trump administration on June 23 caused a huge blow to Indian IT professionals eyeing the US job market. His administration suspended the H-1B visas along with other types of foreign work visas until the end of 2020. Many analysts consider it was a clever move to protect American workers in a crucial election year.
But, will Biden’s promise to revoke will further strengthen his leads and emerge as a clear winner over Trump. Listen to him
77-year-old Biden may be also jubilant as numerous nationwide polls of voters show that he is taking a commanding, double-digit lead over President Donald Trump. Yes, with less than five months to go until Election Day. According to CNBC’s averages of polls posted to RealClearPolitics, at this point in the cycle, no other Republican or Democratic nominee in the last four elections was as far ahead of their opponent as Biden is against Trump.
Yet, the University of Texas interestingly came out with its own survey claiming if elections were to be held today, Trump would beat former Vice President Joe Biden in Texas by 4 percentage points. In fact, Republican candidates haven’t lost a presidential race in Texas in four decades. Trump beat Hillary Clinton by 9 percentage points in 2016 in the closest race since Bob Dole beat Bill Clinton here by 4.9 points in 1996. The biggest Texas winners over 40 years were Ronald Reagan (27.5 percentage points in 1984) and George W. Bush, the former Texas governor who won both his 2000 and 2004 contests by margins of more than 21 points.
In fact, the H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. The technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China.
US Poll Tracker projecting Biden to set to bag 307 against the requisite 270 to occupy White House, while Trump has been reduced to get just 148. In that backdrop, one has to wait and see whose decision – Trump’s ban on H1b visas or Biden’s promise to revoke will prove decisive.
