In 1921, a wounded and exhausted Nestor Makhno crossed the Dniester River into exile with only a few hundred survivors. Just three years earlier, he had commanded an army of more than one hundred thousand fighters and ruled a territory home to millions.
Makhno was a peasant with no formal military education, yet he defeated imperial armies, nationalist forces, and repeatedly outmaneuvered the Red Army itself. Using speed, local support, and innovative tactics, his insurgent forces survived against enemies far larger and better equipped. Even when surrounded, Makhno broke through, rebuilt, and returned to fight again.
This documentary explores how Makhno rose from prison cell to revolutionary commander, how his anarchist movement governed large parts of southern Ukraine, and why the Bolsheviks ultimately destroyed his experiment through betrayal and political strategy rather than battlefield victory. It is a story about revolution, power, and why independence was intolerable in a system built on central control.
