At first glance, it looks like a sleek private jet—but the Piaggio Avanti Evo hides one of aviation’s most unusual designs. With its long nose, smooth curves, and sculpted fuselage, most people assume it’s a light jet rolling down the runway. But take a closer look and you’ll notice something surprising: there are no jet engines. What you’re actually looking at is one of the fastest and most advanced turboprops ever built.
Unlike traditional turboprops with propellers mounted on the front, the Avanti Evo flips the design completely. Its twin propellers sit behind the wings in a pusher configuration, pushing the aircraft forward instead of pulling it. Combined with a rare three-lifting-surface design—featuring a canard, main wing, and tailplane—this layout dramatically improves aerodynamic efficiency and reduces drag. Even the fuselage contributes to lift, making the aircraft far more efficient than conventional turboprops.
The performance numbers are what really turn heads. The Avanti Evo can cruise between roughly 402 and 462 mph, placing it closer to the speed of light jets than most turboprops. It can climb to 25,000 feet in about ten minutes and reach a maximum altitude of 41,000 feet, where many business jets typically cruise. Despite this jet-like performance, it burns significantly less fuel—around 40% less than comparable light jets, making it an incredibly efficient option for private aviation.
Range is another major advantage. Depending on configuration, the aircraft can travel around 1,470 to 1,980 nautical miles, comfortably covering routes such as New York to Dallas or London to Rome without refueling. And because it can take off and land on relatively short runways—around 3,190 feet for takeoff and 3,280 feet for landing—it can access many smaller regional airports that jets cannot easily use.
Step inside, and the experience feels more like a private jet than a turboprop. The cabin is spacious enough for six to nine passengers, with premium Italian leather interiors inspired by luxury brands like Ferrari and Maserati. Large oval windows bring in plenty of light, and the rear-mounted propellers reduce cabin noise dramatically—making the flight feel quieter and smoother than most turboprop aircraft.
Up front, pilots benefit from advanced avionics powered by the Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion cockpit system. Large touchscreen displays, artificial vision technology, and infrared-based enhanced vision systems help pilots navigate even in difficult weather or low visibility. Combined with powerful Pratt & Whitney PT6A-66B engines, the aircraft delivers impressive performance while maintaining the reliability turboprops are known for.
Recently, the Avanti Evo received renewed attention after Turkish aerospace company Baykar acquired Piaggio Aerospace, with plans to increase production and introduce upgrades using advanced technologies and improved avionics. With renewed investment and modernization on the horizon, the aircraft may soon see a new wave of interest in the private aviation market.
Today, the Avanti Evo attracts CEOs, entrepreneurs, governments, and military operators who want jet-like speed without the massive operating costs of traditional business jets. Priced at roughly $8 million, it competes with aircraft like the King Air 350 and Citation M2—but its real advantage shows in long-term operating efficiency.
In many ways, the Piaggio Avanti Evo sits in a category of its own—too fast to behave like a typical turboprop, yet far more efficient than most jets. With its futuristic design, luxurious cabin, and impressive performance, it’s easy to see why aviation enthusiasts often call it the “Ferrari of the skies.”
