In my short but productive career as an an Accidental Pop Star, I had a few Top Ten songs in NZ but only one Number One and that was LOVELY LADY. As catchy as the song may be I've no doubt the real reason for its success was that it as entered in the TV Song Contest STUDIO ONE. There was only one TV station at the time. Talk about a captive audience.

My song entered the Best Three early in the series and remained there for the ensuing weeks. So, every Sunday night virtually every household in the nation saw me warbling a few bars of the song with the backing of the Studio One band.

While I did not win the contest (came second) my record company insisted I re-record LL for a record release with an arrangement by my lifelong friend and arranger/producer, Mike Harvey. I'm not sure Mike or I thought anything much would come of it.

However, I clearly remember driving somewhere in back blocks one cold night when I was on tour and my Tour Manager Stephen Stokes pulled the car over to the side of the road just in time to hear that Lovely Lady was Number One on the now defunct Hit Parade.

No one was more surprised than me. Then again, my peers elected the song as the APRA SILVER SCROLL winner that year, so what would I know?

Incidentally, the only video footage that exists of me the height of my career are a few seconds from STUDIO ONE and a badly shot news piece shot some time later. About one minute in totality. Sad, but true.
