The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is a flagship initiative of the Government of India launched in 2019 with the ambitious goal of providing tap water supply to every rural household by 2024.
Key Objectives of the JJM:
Universal Access: To ensure that every rural household has access to safe and adequate drinking water.
Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs): To provide FHTCs to all rural households.
Water Quality: To ensure that the water supplied is of good quality and meets the prescribed standards.
Sustainability: To promote sustainable water management practices, including water conservation, rainwater harvesting, and groundwater recharge.
Community Participation: To involve communities in the planning, implementation, and maintenance of water supply systems.
Benefits of the JJM:
Improved Health: Access to safe drinking water can significantly reduce waterborne diseases and improve public health.
Empowering Women: Women and girls often bear the burden of fetching water, and JJM can alleviate this burden, freeing up their time for education and other activities.
Economic Development: Improved water access can boost agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods.
Social Development: JJM can contribute to social development by improving sanitation and hygiene.
Implementation of the JJM:
The JJM is being implemented by the Central Government in partnership with State Governments and Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). The key strategies for implementation include:
Demand-Driven Approach: Prioritizing areas with water scarcity and poor water quality.
Community Participation: Involving communities in decision-making and implementation processes.
Technology-Enabled Solutions: Using technology for monitoring and management of water supply systems.
Capacity Building: Training and capacity building of stakeholders at all levels.
Progress of the JJM:
The JJM has made significant progress since its launch. Millions of rural households have been provided with tap water connections, and efforts are underway to achieve the target of universal coverage by 2024.
