The Theremin is used here to create actual music and not just creepy sound FX like you see most people using the Theremin. Invented in 1910 by Leon Theremin (Lev Termin), the Theremin is a unique instrument in that you don't actually touch it to play it.
The Theremin is played by waving your hands in front of it's two antenae creating changes in pitch and volume. Because there is no frame of reference, the Theremin player must guess where the notes are located, making the Theremin one of the most difficult instruments to play. The Theremin gained in popularity during the 1950's because of heavy use of the Theremin in Horror and Sci-fi B movies of the time. Beside Clara Rockmore, one of the greatest Theremin players of all time was Dr. Samuel Hoffman, who can be heard playing his classic RCA Theremin on the soundtrack of 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'
