It’s So Real – Incredible 3D Hologram Projector with Your Phone | Looks Like Magic

This video shows how to build a simple and impressive 3D hologram using a cardboard box and a transparent film. You’ll see a step-by-step hologram tutorial that turns everyday materials into a hologram projector for phone. It looks like real magic, but it’s absolutely doable at home.

In this project I explain how to make a hologram projector using cardboard and clear film. The most important part is choosing the right sizes. The transparent film should be strong and clear, almost like glass. Thin, soft packaging film will not work well, so it’s better to use something rigid. My film piece turned out to be a square 18 by 18 cm, but this is just an example. You should always adjust the size of the film to match the screen size of your own smartphone. The film only needs to be slightly larger than your phone’s display.

To calculate the size of the cardboard side panels, take the width of your film and divide it by 1.414. This gives you the correct side length for the square panels that will hold the film at the right angle. In my case, with a film width of 18 cm, I got about 12.7 cm. I cut four square sheets of cardboard with sides of 12.7 cm. Two of them I left untouched, and on the other two I drew a diagonal line and then another line 5 mm parallel to it. The 5 mm offset is approximate, it just creates a slot wide enough for the film to slide in easily. After cutting along these lines, I glued the resulting triangular pieces onto the untouched squares to form the slot guides.

For the rectangular base panels, the width should be the same as the squares, and the length should be slightly longer than the film height. This extra length depends on the thickness of your cardboard. Mine was about 2–3 mm thick, so I added a small margin and got 18.8 cm. If your cardboard is thicker or thinner, adjust the length accordingly.

Next, I glued the sidewalls to the base so that the slots were inside and slightly below the diagonal. This way the film rests against the base and does not fall out. On the top rectangle I marked the outline of my smartphone in the center, then made another set of marks 5 mm inside. After cutting along these lines, I got a rectangular hole where the phone sits snugly and the whole screen is visible.

For gluing I used hot glue, but PVA or any paper glue will also work. After assembly, you can paint the box black to make the hologram look brighter and more realistic.

When everything is ready, insert the film into the slots, place your smartphone in the opening, and play a hologram video. On YouTube you can find many options by searching for “hologram video” or “hologram video for smartphone.” Set the screen brightness to maximum, lock the rotation, expand the video to full screen, and flip the image upside down. Place the phone into the projector and enjoy the effect. If you turn off the main light in the room, the hologram will look even brighter.
