I'm testing the NTG-1 microphone from Rode with my Canon 60D DLSR video setup.
Paired with the Zoom H4n, the NTG-1 is probably the best mic I've ever heard for video. You can hear the incredible low end response couple with great sound rejection.
Shotgun microphones provide excellent audio when used in proper situations. Here I am in a fairly stable position with the NTG-1 mounted just overhead attached to a combo boom pole/reflector tripod stand by Impact.
Shotgun mics can also be very useful in dynamic filming situations such as "man on the street" type interviews. This works best if you have a dedicated person to control the microphone but can also be done by mounting the microphone to the camera.
Unlike the Rode NTG-2 this mic does not have an option to be powered by a battery. This is a disadvantage especially in a DLSR setup where you might need to plug directly into your camera. But for a small price (approx. 20 dollars more) you can upgrade to the NTG-2. However, I DO NOT recommend using the NTG-2 with the H4n, their is an impedance mismatched and it doesn't provide enough gain to work with the NTG-2.
