Jenike & Johanson - hopper flow pattern discussion. Material handling engineer describes the two types of flow patterns that can result in a silo, bin, hopper, or bunker. The first pattern, called funnel flow, results when particles do not flow along the walls of the hopper, thereby providing stagnant material zones, and possible ratholing with a cohesive material. The hopper walls are not sufficiently steep or smooth enough to allow flow against them. The second pattern, called mass flow, results when all of the material is in motion during discharge. Mass flow provides a first-in, first-out discharge sequence, eliminates ratholing, and yields a consistent, non-segregated discharge. The hopper geometry and material of construction can be determined through powder or bulk material flow testing and engineering.
Jenike & Johanson is a bulk material engineering firm specializing in powder and bulk solids handling technology.
