From Singer-Songwriter Matthew Angus on the themes in the song:
So much of this album is about my experiences trying to balance these two powerful forces inside of me that seem to be in opposition: ambition and self-doubt.
I am marked by this obnoxious, uncontrollable ambitious streak. I want to do everything, and be the best I can be at it. I throw myself into my work, powered by some mysterious force that has no basis in rationality. I suffer from an unassailable need to create, connect, explore.
And yet in the midst of that unstoppable force, it is greeted every time with what seems like an unbeatable enemy. The belief that it’s all pointless, hopeless, that what I’m doing won’t make a difference to anyone. That everybody’s gonna die, including me, so what’s the point?
How do these two creatures survive inside of me at once?
Top of the Mountain was a repeating chorus that has been in my head for years. “We’re going to the top of the mountain. We’re going to the top of the mountain. We’re going to the top of the mountain. Then we come back down.” Is it pointless? Or is it amazing?
I finally showed this phrase to the human that knows me best -- Kirty -- and together we wrote verses that finally fleshed out the song and what it meant.
This one’s about that unstoppable engine in all of us that pushes us forward, to try to make things, to progress, to be better, only to turn around and die, and eventually be forgotten. There aren’t many answers in here, and like so many of the songs on this album, this is more of a feeling than a thought. But some part of the way this turned out makes me feel like all of this climbing is worth something. But it’s still a mystery to me as to what’s at the top.
