Enabling Leadership to Spur Innovation in Higher Education and ELL: Principles and Practices for the New Academy

Higher education institutions (HEIs) and by extension their faculties must be adaptive to address the emergence of new challenges, disruptors, and change drivers. The COVID pandemic has underscored the necessity for adaptive leadership approaches which enable HEIs to better prepare for and respond to such changes. “Leadership” is often viewed through the lens of the top-down, pyramidic organizational structures that materialized in the post-industrial economy; however, the transition to a knowledge economy demands new conceptualizations of “leadership” in knowledge organizations. This presentation will offer practical leadership-oriented solutions to solving challenges faced by the New Academy in HEIs broadly and English language learning (ELL) and English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts more specifically. The presentation will situate Japan higher education (HE) within the global HE sector and then suggest principled approaches both formal (e.g., those in traditional leadership roles) and informal (e.g., those who participate in leadership processes) leaders can adopt to engender innovation within their work groups, faculties, and institutions. The presenter will align extant literature on leadership with practical examples, case studies, and his own recently completed doctoral research into utilizing leadership practices to cultivate more diverse faculties. The presentation will be of those interested in effective leadership practices in educational organizations, particularly those working in HE and/or ELL and EFL contexts.
